The Hair Saga: Dusty Rose or Passion Pink?

Y’all… I just watched a tribute to the music of the Bee Gees last night, so I currently have the songs Night Fever and Staying Alive on a constant loop of annoyance in my brain space. Slap a disco ball on me and call me Travolta! I’m really mostly sorry you had to miss the dancing because woo boy… if the Village People were present they’d have arrested me on the spot… for serious!

In other news, I got a “tip” on how to better color stubborn grey hairs… I usually just buy a box of dye at the Wally World and slap that sucker on like it’s 1952. It’s worked fine, except for the fact that I still see errant greys sticking out in my bangs and temple regions… I’ve pretty much pulled way too many grey hairs out my head as that was my method of covering grey for many years, so I have like 12 hairs left. When I was getting my hair cut the other week, I asked the stylist for some tips… and tips she gave. Go to Sally Beauty, pick a color (lighter than the color you want because it always colors darker) and then 2 different developers, a stronger one and a not so stronger one. Okay… well, how easy is that said the grey hair puller chic!

When I was at Sally Beauty Supply looking through the hair colors, I ran into a lady in her 50s or 60s? I can never guess with ages… she turned to me and was all like, which color do you think would look best on me… this dusty rose color or passion pink? Seeing as I have a conservative stick up my butt and the last thing I did that made me stand out in a crowd (well, besides weighing 530 pounds at one point) was split my pants open (and that wasn’t on purpose), I was about to point her to the mousy brown section, when she threw in the hot pink color to the choices. Okay, Jem and the Holograms… but where’s Rainbow Brite!?

I settled on a brown color with a reddish tint to it since that’s my natural hair color… even picked the lighter shade since that was part of the tip. To make a long story less long, Saturday night’s mixture made me look like Anne of Green Gables on steroids… wayyyyy too reddish pinkish… not the pretty color of red either. The next day I used a brown color from Wally World, that I already had in my closet, over top of it hoping it would temper the brightness… it sure did Gertrude… if you enjoy your hair being purple. Whatever… I will give that lady one thing… my greys were sure as heck all covered up after that ordeal. It’s been a few weeks of hair washing and the color has tamed down quite a bit, so I don’t mind it now even if it’s not the color I wanted. Moral of the story, go with dusty rose… always!

How is everyone else doing this rainy April!? Anything new and groovy?

The purplish hair (after the 2nd dye job)… you can’t tell how purpley it was because of the lighting… but let’s just say if the Hot Pink chick was looking for someone to play in her Jem Band, I was her girl!

I had to take a leap of faith in the hair department as well, Whitney, and visit the boxed hair color aisle. I haven’t bought boxed color since college when I decided to “wash (a certain man) right out of my hair”.
My husband had to drop some serious $mullah$ on a new transmission for his pickup so I didn’t have the cash for the salon. My greys needed covering but I wasn’t in need of a cut yet.
Lauren was home from college, so off to Wally-World we went. She needed a few things and I needed her to help me choose a color that I would be happy with. We came out with our treasures and my anxiety over the next step kept rising. I enlisted Lauren’s help to cover my greys and keep my jitters under control. The last thing I wanted was the rainbow of colors that so many people (of every age) are doing. The incident that stands out to me the most is when I was in a waiting room recently and an elderly black woman, who was beautiful and very well dressed, poised and together, sat down across from me. She had her hair buzzed very short and up the sides and it was taller and a little spikey on top. She had the features for it and it looked really good but …it was bright BLUE.
I am very particular when it comes to my hair and it takes me a long time to get up the nerve to try something new with it.
I picked a color that is the closest to my natural color, but one shade darker because I am outside a lot and the sunshine lightens it.
So, I bit the bullet and did it….or Lauren did it …
We focused just on the grey roots and it turned out pretty well.
It didn’t turn out any weird color and it didn’t change what I already had.
I could breathe easy at last!
It’s been several weeks now and my hair is really needing a cut and my greys will need a touch up. I am a little anxious to see if my friend at the salon will say anything about my adventure with the box color. I hope I didn’t hurt her feelings…

    • I’m glad yours worked out, Louisa! Not much worse than having to walk around town with hair that you hate! I remember when my grandma was alive and she used to try to color her grey hair but it would always tint blue or purple! I’m glad hair color has come a long way since then!

I never know if my comments will be able to be posted. I guess it depends on which computer I’m on and if I’m signed in correctly! I really like the color! Looks great. I don’t dye my hair because I know I’d just do a messy job and I’m kind of lazy in those areas. I did luck out though in that none of my siblings and I go gray early. My sister has highlights done to her hair to cover the gray and my other sister has to be putting highlights on her hair as she is mostly blonde and I’m sure she would never be blonde any other way. I only have a few streaks of gray. My brother, at age 49, has little gray at all, nor my 52 year old brother. I’ve noticed more gray lately. I turn 60 in July. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Looks like your nephew is at that age. Funny picture!!!

Are you about done with school!?!?!

    • You got the non-grey hair genes! That will save a ton on hair coloring over the years! šŸ˜› My mom was pretty much all grey in her 20s, so I got her genes. BoBo is almost terrible twos… a few more months! I graduate in 2 weeks… coming up. I hope you are surviving the double jobs and have a vacation planned for sometime in the next while!

Haha! I know you’ve always wanted to be a part of the holograms! I think your hair looks really pretty in the picture, although I know color doesn’t always appear the same in pictures. I think you should find your pink haired friend and start a band–and of course have darling BoBo be in it! Your mountain pictures are dreamy!

    • Maybe you could go green hair and join the band… we need a rainbow of hair colors! šŸ˜› I hope you are doing fabulous, my friend… if not, I will need to find a way to send you some Charlie’s or Aggies in the mail!
